Beni shi en is a variegated tree in the ''Matsumurae'' group. Its name means ''Red Smoke''. It is a fairly vigorous plant forming a snall upright tree reaching 15-18 feet on maturity.
Leaves are very deeply divided and change color throughout the season. Holds its color well even in the South without burning.
Young leaves are feathery and a rosy red color. As they develop more purple tones appear then green tones with a noticeable green mid-rib. Leaves can look pinkish in late summer and slowly turn golden in fall. Plants are currently ~ 18-30" tall.
