This plant is well known for its rough bark effect. Yes it'a also known as the 'Rough Bark Maple' and Arakawa means "rough bark"!

Normally it takes about 3-5 years before the bark roughening becomes visible. Green foliage is typical palmatum and the plant matures at about 25 feet or so in height. Interestingly the plant responds well to bonsai treatment and retains its rough bark appearance- although the plants we have at over 60" tall are a bit past that stage and would need pruning back!
